Cameroon Cracks Down on Adulterated Fuel: Over 1,000 Litres Seized in Yaoundé Operation

The Ministry of Water Resources and Energy, working closely with Cameroon’s defense and security forces, has intensified its fight against illegal fuel distribution, seizing 1,085 litres of adulterated fuel during a coordinated operation in Yaoundé and surrounding areas.
In a major effort to safeguard public safety and protect the country’s energy sector, the Ministry of Water Resources and Energy, in collaboration with defense and security forces, conducted a large-scale mission targeting the proliferation of adulterated fuel in Yaoundé and its environs. The operation, carried out last week, resulted in the seizure of 1,085 litres of fraudulent fuel intended for illegal sale.
Authorities say the crackdown is part of a broader national strategy to combat the dangerous and growing black-market fuel trade, which poses serious risks to consumers, damages vehicle engines, and undermines the formal petroleum supply chain. According to officials, adulterated fuel often mixed with kerosene or other unsafe substances has contributed to numerous mechanical failures and economic losses across the country.
The joint taskforce reportedly targeted known hotspots, roadside vendors, and hidden supply points. Several suspects are currently under investigation, and the seized fuel has been secured as evidence.
Speaking after the operation, representatives from the Ministry stressed the government’s commitment to ensuring the quality and safety of fuel circulating in Cameroon. They further warned that similar missions will continue in other regions.
Residents have welcomed the move, noting that the circulation of fake fuel has been a persistent concern for drivers and businesses. Authorities are urging the public to purchase fuel only from authorized stations and to report any suspicious activity.
The government reiterates that the fight against adulterated fuel remains a priority as it seeks to protect consumers, support economic integrity, and safeguard national security.
